apple agar delights
Do you ever wish you could eat candy endlessly and not feel even a little bit bad about it?
These Apple Agar Delights are a very healthy alternative to candy, and make quite a fun and filling snack for any time of the day, even breakfast !
To make these candies even more fun to eat, i brought out these barn yard animals to cut the candies into. The only thing is that i am not quite sure if i labeled the animals correctly, they are very hard to identify. For example: do you see the cookie cutter labeled fish? The reason i have the fish upside down is because, when i was taking the picture i thought it was a rabbit standing up. I should have realized that it wasn't a rabbit because it is the only animal standing up. Oh well, if there are any other animal cutters that look incorrectly labeled please let me know, i am sure i have at least one of them wrong, haha !
Apple agar delights
2 Macintosh apples, peeled cored and cut into small chunks
2 lemons, juiced
maybe about 1/4 -1/2 cup of water
maple syrup(or Stevia), to taste
3-4 drops of liquid Stevia
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon(optional)
1/4 teaspoon powder ginger(optional)
2 tablespoons, plus 1/4 teaspoon Agar powder
In a saucepan, add the the apple bits the lemon juice, and the water. Bring to a boil, then turn down heat to low and let the mixture cook down a bit until the apples are very soft. Take a bowl and a strainer and pour the apple lemon mixture into the strainer over the bowl and press the mixture through until all of the liquid and the(now mashed) apple fiber has gone though, so you will end up with a somewhat thick sauce in bowl. Add that sauce back into the saucepan, add the sweeteners and the spices. Don't add the agar yet. Turn the heat up to medium, let the mixture heat through then start adding the agar powder(a little bit at a time so that the agar doesn't clump up).Once all of the agar is added and the mixture is smooth and thick, pour it into a glass casserole pan or a mold of your choice(i used a medium sized pan so that my jellies are about 1/2 inch thick)and let cool on the counter top.
Once the mold has cooled all the way through and is completely firm, pop it out of the pan on a flat surface and cut into whatever shapes please you. You can even simply cut them into squares, that is really nice. Now feel free to eat as many of these as you want!
*You may notice that you get full on these rather quickly. That is because Agar is a very filling fiber, made of seaweed. It has been recommended to dieters because it fills you up so quickly, and i believe has very few calories, but I'm not sure, I've never been one to count calories.
Also, for the fun of it, i made a little candy label . . . i know, i need to work on my label making skills. I guess that means i just have to make more candy, oh darn !
